A £1.3 million initiative is looking into whether or not robots can create lasers

-

UK (Commonweath Union)_ The process of making lasers is time-consuming and delicate, requiring precise alignment of each component as each device is put together. Since the process currently demands specialized production lines, it is difficult and expensive for the businesses who manufacture lasers to swiftly adapt to changes in demand from their markets.

The new three-year project, funded by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), seeks to determine whether robots could be u sed to complete some of the manufacturing process’s most tedious and repetitive assembly and alignment steps, freeing up humans to focus on the crucial testing and quality-control steps. The National Robotarium formally opened the doors to its brand-new, state-of-the-art £22.4 million facility in Edinburgh on September 28, 2022, which coincides with the announcement of the ground-breaking research initiative. It is the most sophisticated robotics and artificial intelligence center in the UK and has several top-notch facilities for researchers and enterprises. It draws on knowledge from both Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh.

The recently established facility will play a significant part in the usage of lasers. The location includes a specialized laser laboratory, and its initiatives include creating robots that will use the technology in a variety of settings, from remote sensing for agriculture to medical diagnosis and treatment. Industrial professionals from optical components will collaborate with researchers from the National Robotarium on their laser project.

The National Robotarium is a component of the Data-Driven Innovation program, which has funding from the Scottish Government of £1.4 million and the UK Government of £21 million. The program, which is a component of the larger £1.3 billion Edinburgh and South-East Scotland City Region Deal, intends to make Edinburgh the data capital of Europe.
