GLOBAL (COMMONWEALTH UNION) – what is a saree?
Well essentially speaking its 6 yards of fabric that women of south Asian culture use in various ways. It can go from something you wear at home, to work and even fancy functions.
The 6 yards can differ according to the occasions. The thing about this is that these 6 yards represent so much in south Asian fashion. The women who wore them in the years gone by have either handpicked these saris or have had them gifted to them which were also chose with care. Saris were a statement that only certain nationalities wore anywhere in the world to showcase culture.
Some saris have been passed down as tradition. Where women of the house hold would use the sari for special occasions which is also a cultural thing almost like the western world using a wedding dress for generations. But the one thing we must understand is that the sari has humble beginnings, but has maintained itself long enough to see the 21st century.
Of course, with retro fashion becoming a trend and cultures being diversified the sari has now been to several parts of the world as a fashion piece or statement. Beyonce wore a sari designed by the famous Indian designer Sabyasachi. The Sabyasachi fashion house in India is like the Dior fashion house in Paris.
But this isn’t to speak of the fashion houses in India this is to speak about the comeback that the sari is making. There was time where the sari was taking a step back and letting the lime light shine elsewhere. But it looks like the new generations are bringing the sari back in a big way.
The younger generations have realized that the sari is now a statement piece. The 6 yards are making a come back in a very big way. Asian women and non-Asian women are embracing the sari and making it their own fashion statement. Which is exciting on its own.
There are women of south Asian decent living in other countries that are embracing the sari and making it a cultural piece where they showcase the culture that they inherited. There are no designers and fashion houses that have never created a sari looking at the possibility of using the design to make it a little bit more European. But the thing is no matter what they do the sari will always be the sari.
The sari making this comeback is a big deal as it happening all over the world. This is a brilliant culture diversification. The world needs this diversification as the world is a melting pot of all these cultures. The sari is making a statement and the younger generation is what makes it happen. Through social media influence we can see that the sari is making its way in the fashion world.
Social media will help the comeback reach all other platforms and this is what the trend needs. The 6 yards making a come back is brilliant and as a south Asian woman who has had sari in her culture from the time she can remember. I am very excited for this come back. I am proud of this humble 6 yards tha has made it way to the pinnacle of fashion. I’m proud that women from all stages of life can afford to wear it and feel beautiful which was what it was intended for.
Finally, I’m proud that the culture and dress we grew up in is getting the recognition it truly deserves in terms of fashion. As a south Asian woman, I’m proud of the come back
