A graduate’s guide to the marine industry

(Commonwealth) _ The marine sector, as the name implies, includes shipbuilding and boatbuilding, as well as maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and refits for individual, commercial, and government clients. This industry employs 31,000 people in Australia and contributes $9 billion to the Australian economy, generating $575 million in exports each year. There is some overlap between the maritime business and the marina industry, which employs over 23,000 people to handle boat berthing, mooring, and storage. With 95% of Australia’s imports arriving by sea, the maritime industry is extremely important economically. While many marine sector professionals work on large-scale public projects (particularly for the military), around one-third work on civil projects. The industry comprises workers who work with radio and radar equipment, pumps and pumping apparatus, hoists, scaffolding, and research and development.

Shipbuilding and boatbuilding, as well as related maintenance services, are the core activities of individuals in the maritime manufacturing industry. These are complicated activities involving multiple sub-specialties and distinct procedures, such as drydock operation, hull cleaning, shipwrecking, submarine building, and the manufacture of canoes, dinghies, jet boats, yachts, and powerboats. To achieve its objectives, the marine sector brings together engineers, electricians, motor mechanics, project administrators, draftspeople, technicians, and a variety of other experts. Other operations in the marine industry include the operation of cruise lines and leisure boats, domestic sea freighting, and assistance for Australia’s offshore oil and gas businesses.

There are roughly 2,000 enterprises in the Australian maritime manufacturing industry, with 32% located in Queensland, 28% in NSW, and 18% in Victoria. Shipbuilding and boatbuilding activity is concentrated in the Greater Perth, Greater Queensland, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne areas. The day-to-day environment of a maritime manufacturing worker varies depending on their unique function and might range from office work for designers and engineers to dock labor for painters and technicians.

While the military is a key employer in this business, there are also numerous large commercial firms, including Arctic Steel, Austal, Incat, Rivergate, and Steber International. There are just a few designated academic routes for students who want to work in the marine business. A marine qualification can be obtained at TAFE or by training at the Australian Maritime College, the Australian Maritime & Fishing Academy, or other private education institutions. Alternatively, many positions in the marine sector are filled by direct application by graduates with necessary abilities. Mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, technicians, project managers, and administrators are examples of these professionals. On-the-job training is available for the majority of these positions. In several of its key activities, Australia’s marine sector confronts uncertainty. Domestic shipping businesses, for example, face stiff rivalry from international operators, and the site of significant defense shipbuilding activities remains a source of contention. Maritime Industry Australia, a business member’s group that protects maritime employees’ interests, thinks that legislative reforms can safeguard the industry while increasing its GDP contribution by roughly 50%.Engineers are highly respected in the marine business, and big ships, such as cruise ships and freighters, frequently have one on board. Outside of such specialized technical employment, your STEM education will most certainly be advantageous since it displays that you have excellent attention to detail and the capacity to engage carefully with complicated challenges. We drew the connection with dating because it might be a useful guide for how to portray and manage yourself in an interview. On a first date, you want to present the finest version of yourself: you want to sell yourself softly without making it clear that you’re selling yourself. You want to come across as easygoing, natural, engaging, outrageously intriguing, and, above all, the right person and fit for the person across the table. This is essentially what happens during a job interview.
