55 percent of the 1500 people who responded were aware about the Summit Series whilst 42 percent were only familiar with what it used to be. In fact, in today’s day and age, if there is a goal that everyone remembers it is Crosby’s golden goal at the Vancouver Olympics.

Friday marks the exact 50th anniversary of Game 1 of the Summit Series, stirring conversations about how high the tensions were in peak wartimes when Canada had the opportunity to be of immense significance in the battle against communism. Moments like the the ankle-breaking slash of Valeri Kharlamov are forever marked in history as memoirs of the lengths Canada reached in order to attain victory, yet failed as the Soviet championed the series on home ice in a 7-3 ratio during game 1.

However, in recent times, Hockey has been swept under the rug and does not have the hype anymore. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau froze funds being allocated for Hockey. He Said, “it is fairly clear that both the government and the Canadians have lost confidence in the leadership at Hockey Canada.”

A four-part documentary series, supported by the 1972 Team Canada players will air on CBC and CBC Gem on September 14th as a remembrance of the great Summit Series back in the day.
