A Saskatchewan man is taking the fancy dance — and Indigenous culture — all the way to Super Bowl LVII

Canada _ (Commonwealth Union) _ A guy from Saskatchewan’s Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation is bringing his abilities to one of the world’s largest stages. Patrick Mitsuing’s performance during Super Bowl LVII on Sunday will assist to highlight Indigenous culture.

Mitsuing says the chance in front of him is worth savoring after growing up on the tiny First Nation northwest of Saskatoon. Mitsuing has been performing the fancy dance, an Indigenous traditional dance, throughout the celebrations building up to the Super Bowl in Glendale this week. Mitsuing claims it will be his largest performance ever, with over 70,000 people in attendance.

“I hope to motivate a lot of the younger generation to keep flourishing and studying their culture, and knowing that who we are can take us to these wonderful places like the Super Bowl,” he added.

Mitsuing, the owner of the Powwow Times dance group, grew raised in a powwow household. As a child, he participated in traditional Indigenous rituals such as circle dances, sweat lodges, and sun dances, but it was the fancy dance that piqued his interest.

“My late-dad gave me a power suit a fancy dance outfit for my 13th birthday, and that was the beginning of my tale as a fancy dancer,” he explained.

Only fancy dancers use double bustles, or feathered regalia, which are situated on the top and lower parts of their bodies, according to Mitsuing.

According to him, the dance is fast-paced, which makes it a crowd-pleaser. Donald Speidal, the senior lead on Indigenous involvement for Saskatoon Public Schools, is overjoyed about Mitsuing’s opportunity to play at the Super Bowl. “It was incredibly difficult for me to locate role models that looked like me when I was growing up,” he remarked. Mistuing believes that his performance on Sunday will help to change that.
