Festus Mogae, the former president of Botswana, has died at the age of 86. President Duma Boko announced the news on Friday. He said the country had lost a respected leader who dedicated his life to serving the nation.

Mogae was president from 1998 until 2008. He had been unwell for some time before his death. Last month, the government confirmed that he was receiving treatment at a hospital in the capital city, Gaborone. However, officials did not reveal details about his illness.

As Botswana’s third president, Mogae played an important role in improving the country’s economy and public institutions. During his leadership, Botswana experienced strong economic growth, mainly because of its diamond industry. Many people praised him for careful financial planning and good governance.

In a speech to the nation, Boko described Mogae as a disciplined and responsible leader. He said Mogae helped Botswana gain respect around the world for its stable government and democratic values.

The government announced three days of national mourning. Flags across the country will be lowered to half-masts to honour the late former president.

Before becoming president, Mogae worked in several senior government positions. He served as finance minister and later became vice-president.

Mogae was also recognised for leading Botswana’s fight against HIV/AIDS. At one point, the country had one of the highest infection rates in the world. Under his leadership, Botswana introduced a large treatment program that provided antiretroviral medication to many people. This helped reduce deaths and infections.

Even after leaving the office, he continued supporting HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment across Africa. He also took part in peace and advisory work in different African countries.

In 2008, Mogae received the prestigious Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership for his democratic leadership and peaceful transfer of power. He was later succeeded by Ian Khama.
