(Commonwealth_ CHOGM) Air New Zealand is significantly boosting its flight capacity to Samoa in preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), responding to heightened demand from international delegates. Between October 14 and October 31, the airline will operate a total of 25 return flights to Apia, Samoa’s capital, representing a 29% increase in capacity compared to standard operations for this period.
In a strategic move to accommodate more passengers, Air New Zealand has transitioned from narrowbody Airbus aircraft to larger widebody Boeing aircraft. This change not only increases the overall seating capacity but also enhances options for customers seeking premium cabin experiences, with premium capacity rising by an impressive 88%. Currently, over 9,000 customers have booked flights during this crucial period, and estimates suggest that the CHOGM event is directly responsible for at least half of this demand. The airline has recorded an unprecedented surge in interest, with 1,800 bookings to Samoa in just one week, underscoring the event’s significance.
Kiri Hannafin, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at Air New Zealand, emphasized the airline’s commitment to supporting Samoa during this important occasion. “By increasing our capacity, we aim to ensure the smooth transportation of CHOGM attendees as well as other travelers during this significant event. Delegates from over 50 nations, including representatives from 26 Commonwealth countries, will be relying on our services. Enhancing our flights to Apia not only aids the event’s logistics but also aligns with our longstanding commitment to strengthening Samoa’s connectivity to the world.”
To further bolster operational efficiency, Air New Zealand is deploying over 20 ground staff from various airports across Aotearoa to Samoa, ensuring that service levels meet the anticipated increase in passenger volume. The airline is proud to contribute to the success of CHOGM by facilitating the travel of delegates and dignitaries.
Additionally, with the introduction of larger aircraft on these routes, Air New Zealand is well-positioned to meet an increase in cargo demand, thereby supporting local businesses and the broader economy during this high-profile event. As Samoa prepares to host CHOGM, Air New Zealand remains dedicated to playing a pivotal role in the successful execution of this international gathering, demonstrating its commitment to its Pacific Island neighbor and the global community.
