Around 20,000 Canadian Teslas are included in a recall to address ‘full self-driving’ system faults

Canada _ (Commonwealth Union) _ Tesla is recalling almost 363,000 vehicles in the United States, as well as more than 20,000 in Canada, that are equipped with its “full self-driving” system to address issues with how it operates around intersections and responds to legal speed limits.

The recall is part of a bigger examination of Tesla’s autonomous driving systems by US safety regulators. Regulators have highlighted worries about how Tesla’s system operates in four spots along roadways. According to papers provided Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA), Tesla will address the issues with an online software upgrade in the coming weeks.

According to the papers, Tesla is proceeding with the recall but does not agree with an agency examination of the problem. According to Transport Canada, Tesla has submitted a notice of defect that affects 20,667 vehicles in Canada.

According to the NHTSA, the self-driving system, which is being tested on public roads by up to 400,000 Tesla owners, performs unsafe actions such as driving straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane, failing to come to a complete stop at stop signs, and driving through an intersection during a yellow traffic light without proper caution.

Moreover, the system may not respond appropriately to changes in stated speed restrictions, or it may fail to account for the driver’s speed modifications, according to the papers. A message was left with Tesla, which has abolished its public relations staff, on Thursday requesting comment.

“Tesla issued a recall to remedy those problems, as required by law and following talks with NHTSA,” the agency stated. Despite CEO Elon Musk’s statements that “complete self-driving” automobiles do not require human involvement, Tesla states on its website that the cars cannot drive themselves and that owners must always be ready to act.

According to NHTSA testing, “auto-steer on city streets,” which is part of Tesla’s FSD beta testing, “poses an excessive danger to motor vehicle safety due to poor adherence to traffic safety regulations.”

The recall applies to select 2016-2023 Model S and Model X cars, as well as 2017 through 2013 Model 3s and 2020 through 2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with or awaiting installation of the software.
