Canada will treble the international student cost of living requirement.

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ The Canadian government is ushering in a significant change to the cost-of-living requirement for international students, slated to take effect on January 1, 2024. Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller, announced that the financial threshold for single applicants will more than double, necessitating a showcase of 20,635 Canadian dollars ($15,181) in addition to their first-year tuition and travel expenses.

This adjustment comes after a prolonged period of stagnation in the cost-of-living requirement, which has remained at 10,000 Canadian dollars ($7,357) since the early 2000s. The government recognizes that this stagnation has failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living, leaving arriving students grappling with insufficient funds.

Miller emphasized the dynamic nature of this new threshold, indicating that it will be recalibrated annually in alignment with updates to the low-income cut-off (LICO) by Statistics Canada. LICO represents the minimum income essential to ensure individuals do not have to allocate an above-average portion of their income to basic necessities.

“In welcoming international students, we have a responsibility to make sure that students are supported when they come to our country,” stated Miller. India’s Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, announced a heightened focus on ensuring the well-being of Indian students studying abroad. The government is considering measures such as visa limitations to encourage designated learning institutions to enhance support for students, emphasizing a holistic academic experience. As India takes steps to safeguard its students abroad, it underscores the importance of a supportive environment for international scholars pursuing education in diverse global settings.

The significance of international education is underscored by its contribution of over 22 billion Canadian dollars (16 billion US dollars) to the country’s economy annually. This figure surpasses Canada’s exports of auto parts, lumber, or aircraft and plays a pivotal role in sustaining more than 200,000 jobs in the nation, as highlighted in the official release.
