MONTRÉAL, Québec (CU)_Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sought COVID-19 vaccines from India during a phone call with his Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (Feb 10).
PM Trudeau informed the Indian Prime Minister about Canada’s requirements of COVID-19 vaccines from the South Asian country, and PM Modi assured him that New Delhi would do its best to support Canada’s vaccination efforts, just as it had done for many other countries.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi, PM Trudeau expressed his appreciation for the Indian Prime Minister’s Response, adding that if the world managed to conquer COVID-19, it would be “significantly because of India’s tremendous pharmaceutical capacity, and Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in sharing this capacity with the world”.
During the call, the two leaders reaffirmed their common interests in a free and open Indo-Pacific, as well as the importance of working together on global challenges such as climate change, strengthening global trade, and reinforcing the rules-based international order, PM Trudeau’s office said in a statement.
The statement added that the two prime ministers also underscored the importance of the Canada-India strategic partnership, “anchored in shared values, strong people-to-people ties, and growing bilateral economic cooperation” and that they looked forward to working together at the G7, G20, and other international forums.
