On the 5th of September, President Ranil Wickremesinghe inaugurated “The Mall,” a newly constructed duty-free shopping complex situated in Colombo Port City, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka‘s economic and retail landscape.
This new development is the first urban duty-free shopping mall in the region, setting a new benchmark for shopping experiences in Sri Lanka. The Mall houses a diverse array of stores, restaurants, and retail outlets, promising a world-class shopping experience. Among the prominent international duty-free retailers operating within its walls are One World, China Duty Free Group (CDFG), and Flemingo, all of which contribute to positioning Port City Colombo as a premier shopping destination in the country.

During the opening ceremony, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the remarkable progress of the Port City Colombo. Reflecting on the rapid transformation, he noted that just two years prior, such development seemed implausible. He credited this turnaround to his administration’s efforts in stabilizing the economy, bolstered by support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These measures have paved the way for advancements in the Port City’s financial sector and attracted significant international interest.
The President also pointed out that around 100 companies have shown interest in investing in Port City, with 74 expected to commence their activities by the end of the year. This influx of investment is anticipated to drive further growth and enhance the economic stability of the region.

In his address, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the strategic importance of The Mall in boosting Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. “The inauguration of this duty-free center represents a pivotal moment for Port City,” he stated. “Our tourism sector is gaining global prominence, attracting visitors who are eager to explore this new shopping hub. The development of shopping malls like The Mall is a crucial element of our strategy to elevate the region’s appeal and provide exceptional retail experiences for tourists. This is the beginning of a new era for the Port City.”
