(CU)_One of the world’s leading car and truck manufacturers Daimler said on Wednesday (Feb 18) that it is partnering with Amazon for the testing of Level 4 self-driving trucks.

The company said in a statement that its subsidiary Torc Robotics, specialised in producing unmanned and autonomous technology for machinery and vehicles, has selected Amazon Web Services as a cloud provider for its upcoming tests which are scheduled to be conducted in New Mexico and Virginia.

The German automobile giant noted that Amazon’s “extensive capabilities” in areas such as analytics, data transfer and storage would enable Torc to “accelerate its testing and commercialisation” of Level 4 technology for self-driving trucks.

Vehicle autonomy is classified on the scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being total autonomy. At Level 4, the vehicle does not require a driver, but can only operate in specified geographic areas.

Previously, Daimler has signed similar agreements such as the one with chip company Nvidia, to develop AI driving applications for Levels 2, 3, 4 technology, and another partnership with Google-Alphabet subsidiary Waymo to equip certain lorries with Level 4 technology.

Based in Virginia, Torc Robotics first partnered with Daimler Trucks in 2019, and was subsequently acquired by the German carmaker later that year.
