After weeks of public criticism over delays that have been targeted at U.S. President Donald Trump, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open at the end of this month, although Canada’s set to forgo more revenue than initially agreed upon.
In a statement on Friday, 10 July ’26, Housing, Communities & Infrastructure Canada confirmed the long-awaited opening.
The statement reads in part that Ontario & Michigan have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Monday, 27 July ’26, with the support of the US government.
The bridge will be a major economic driver in the region. It may also provide options for commuters and tourists besides businesses.
This new crossing between Windsor, Ontario & Detroit, Michigan, is predicted to significantly ease congestion at the nearby Ambassador Bridge besides streamlining cross-border trade.

On Friday, 10 July ‘26, the federal government announced that Canada and the U.S. have agreed to a series of cooperative measures focused on toll governance and transparency. Additionally, a 15-year economic development fund will be established, which will be tied to a portion of the profits from bridge operations.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority may also work with the U.S. on a pact for certain non-market-related toll changes.
According to a senior government source, Canada may receive 50% of the bridge’s toll profits in the first 15 years. This is with the other 50% going into the economic development fund announced on Friday, 10 July ’26. The decision regarding who will operate that fund has not yet been made.
The source also told CTV News that both countries agreed that the U.S. may need to be on board if Canada needs to increase bridge tolls by more than 10% or lower them below regional averages.
Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, in the meantime, posted on social media on Friday, 10 July ’26, that he spoke with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on this topic of the bridge. Rogers confirmed that a ‘financial deal’ where he said the U.S. may see ‘up to half the revenue’.
