Calling for all the nature lovers out there. Mauritius invites you to embark on a journey full of natural miracles in Chamarel village located in Rivière Noire District towards West Mauritius. Comprising a breathtaking view of the Chamarel Waterfall and scenic splendor of the Seven Coloured Earths, Chamarel has become a natural paradise in Mauritius.

Chamarel Waterfall

Chamarel Waterfall is a piece of natural elegance amidst verdant surroundings. It is approximately 100m high, making it the tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius. Fueled by the waters of three distinct streams flowing into the Saint Denis River, it boasts a powerful rush, reaching peak flow rates exceeding 40,000 m³ per minute.

Dangling on the edge of a basalt cliff, the Chamarel Waterfall gushes into a serene oval pool before descending a 6km tropical-forest-fringed canyon to reach Baie du Cap. This breathtaking sight not only invigorates the senses with its freshness but also serves as a stunning testament to millions of years of volcanic activity. The dramatic landscape is shaped by layers of ancient lavas, with the base layer dating back 10 to 8 million years and the upper layer formed between 3.5 and 1.7 million years ago.

Seven Colored Earth

Red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow – the mesmerizing, rippling layers of sand, sculpted by nature’s hand. The Seven Coloured Earths are a geological miracle in Mauritius which has become an iconic destination in Mauritius. They extend over an open clearing, the lower part features an endemic garden showcasing Mauritius’ natural heritage. At the top, a breathtaking view of a vast amphitheater filled with ravines adorned in lush tropical vegetation, inviting you to admire the array of vibrant shades before you.

The sand originated from the breakdown of volcanic rock (basalt), which erodes into clay and later evolves into ferralitic soil through complete hydrolysis. This soil is primarily composed of iron and aluminum, giving rise to red or anthracite and blue or purplish hues respectively. The varying colors are thought to result from the volcanic rock cooling at different external temperatures, yet the reasons for their consistent and spontaneous segregation remain unclear.

Chamarel stands out as a destination where geological wonders form a breathtaking masterpiece, enhanced by a harmonious blend of vibrant colors. Its unique natural features have bestowed upon Chamarel an unmatched allure, attracting tourists to explore and uncover its treasures. Renowned for its serene countryside ambiance and refreshing breezes, the village boasts parks, attractions, and nature reserves. Beyond the famous Chamarel Waterfall and Seven Colored Earths, visitors can also enjoy attractions like the Tortoise Park and the captivating Ebony Forest Reserve.
