End of The leader of Solomon Islands’ largest province, who is anti-China!

SOLOMON ISLAND (Commonwealth Union)_According to Australia’s public broadcaster ABC, Daniel Suidani, a vociferous critic of China and the head of the Solomon Islands’ largest province, has been ousted from office following a no-confidence vote in the provincial assembly.

According to ABC, legislators called the vote after accusing Suidani, the premier of Malaita province in the Pacific Islands nation, of misappropriating funds.

Around the time of the election, his supporters assembled in modest numbers in the province capital Auki, where they were confronted by riot police.

Suidani, who was not present at the provincial parliament, was defeated after 17 members voted against him, according to ABC.

Suidani has long criticised Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare’s plan to swap diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China in 2019.

He denied Chinese investment in his province and conducted a series of public festivities to mark the arrival of Taiwanese aid convoys in Malaita during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the fact that the help had not been approved by Sogavare’s government.

Suidani’s continuous support for Taipei put him at odds with the Solomon Islands’ One China policy, resulting in an increasingly acrimonious and public feud between him and Sogavare.

In 2021, violence in Honiara, on the neighbouring island of Guadalcanal, was fueled by dissatisfaction over the central government’s treatment of Malaita and the Solomon Islands’ approach to Beijing.

Rioters attacked buildings and businesses in the capital’s Chinatown neighbourhood, killing at least three people until peace was restored with the assistance of Australian police.

Last April, it was revealed that Sogavare had signed a security agreement with China, causing concern in Australia and abroad.

In response to China’s expanding influence in the Pacific, the US has increased its involvement. The United States reopened its embassy in Honiara last month. The mission was shut down in 1993.
