(Commonwealth_Europe) Sparkle has announced the launch of its new subsea cable, BlueMed, which will connect Italy to France, Greece, and several other countries surrounding the Mediterranean. This innovative project is expected to enhance internet services and connectivity within the region. In a recent agreement signed during the Capacity Middle East 2025 event in Dubai, Sparkle and Cyta, the Cypriot telecommunications operator, have agreed to extend the BlueMed subsea cable to Cyta’s landing station in Yeroskipos, Cyprus. This partnership will allow Cyta to tap into the full capabilities of the BlueMed submarine cable system, which links Cyprus with Greece and various Mediterranean nations.
Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing the importance of reinforcing regional connectivity. He stated that the connection to Cyprus marks a significant milestone in the BlueMed project, designed to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet and digital content in the region. For Cyta, this new addition will greatly enhance its ability to provide superior connectivity services to both enterprise and individual customers in Cyprus.
Once the BlueMed cable is successfully installed, it is expected to complement the existing subsea cables between Pentaskhinos and Chania, specifically the MedNautilus submarine cable systems. This expansion will help diversify the connectivity options between Cyprus and Greece, offering a more robust and reliable infrastructure for internet traffic.
Cyta’s Chief Commercial Officer, George Metzakis, highlighted the strategic significance of this partnership, noting that it not only strengthens their longstanding relationship with Sparkle but also positions Cyprus as a critical hub for connectivity in the Eastern Mediterranean. The integration of BlueMed into Cyta’s network will significantly contribute to the ongoing development of the Cyprus Digital ecosystem, providing local businesses and residents with faster, more reliable internet connections.
The BlueMed subsea cable itself is equipped with four fiber pairs and is designed with an impressive initial capacity of over 25 terabits per second (Tbps) per fiber pair. This high-bandwidth capability will enable Sparkle to offer cutting-edge internet services to regional operators, bolstering the digital economy in the Mediterranean.
Google and other industry partners are collaborating to build BlueMed as part of the broader Blue & Raman Submarine Cable Systems initiative. This extensive system will not only connect the Mediterranean but will also stretch eastward to Mumbai, India, further enhancing connectivity between the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. With the integration of BlueMed, Sparkle is set to play a central role in transforming the digital landscape in the region, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the rapidly evolving global communications infrastructure.
