Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Public Safety Canada’s statement regarding the safety of diplomatic representatives has come to the forefront nearly a month after the circulation of Khalistani posters online, which were aimed at Indian officials. The department’s declaration underscores its resolute dedication to upholding the security of all diplomatic representatives present within Canada’s territory. It unequivocally denounces any propagation of violence and reiterates its firm stance against such acts. This assertion serves as a testament to the Canadian government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of diplomatic personnel and maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for all within its borders.

This statement, communicated through the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), underlines the engagement of Canadian law enforcement in response to an online video that contained threats against Indian diplomatic officials. The Canadian government and law enforcement agencies are actively collaborating to ensure the safety and well-being of all diplomatic representatives.

Last month, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly assured India of the safety of its diplomats, expressing her disapproval of the circulating “promotional material” associated with a Khalistan rally. This incident follows another instance in June, where Canada faced criticism from India for an apparent celebration of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Brampton.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has cautioned partner countries like Canada, the UK, and the US against providing platforms to extremist Khalistani ideologies, highlighting potential repercussions on bilateral relations. He has stated that Canada’s response to the Khalistani issue could be influenced by certain domestic factors.

The Khalistani matter has strained the relationship between India and Canada in recent years, impacting various aspects of their ties. India has consistently urged Canada to refrain from accommodating pro-Khalistani separatists and extremist elements, emphasizing the importance of preserving national security and integrity.
