Fono, meaning ‘gathering’ in Samoan/Pacific, is a conference involving the Pacific Public Service Leaders in 2025, which will be held in Suva, Fiji, from 17 to 20 November.
Bringing together the heads of public service from 16 Pacific Island countries, Australia and New Zealand will participate as observers, while 70 senior officials will be attending this conference.
Focusing on the theme “Winds of change: Reimagining public service in the blue Pacific continent,” the Fono will call attention to discussions on a wide range of topics, including ethical governance, leadership development, building of inclusive workplaces in public service, and even the digital transformation of public services.
The Blue Pacific Continent refers not only to the geographic region encompassing many South Pacific island nations but also to a shared mindset that emphasizes their common identity and aligned interests.
Luke Rokovada, chair of Fiji’s public service commission, highlighted that FONO 2025’s goal is aligned with the long-term 2050 strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, encouraging accountability, strong public institutions, and regional collaboration. Opening the conference, Filimoni Vosarogo, Minister of Fiji’s lands and mineral resources, mentioned, “The challenges we face individually may seem insurmountable, but when we come together to Talanoa … we realize we are not alone in them.”
The conference serves as a regional platform for public service leaders to openly discuss shared challenges, exchange best practices, and coordinate on public sector reform. It represents a significant step toward building resilient, future-ready public institutions across the Pacific, while its alignment with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific highlights a commitment to long-term regional goals and collaboration.
