-

In a heart-wrenching incident, Kiea McCann, 17, and Dlava Mohamed, 16, lost their lives in a collision on the N54 at Legnakelly near Clones, Co Monaghan. The devastating crash occurred around 7 pm on Monday while the two best friends were on their way to their highly anticipated Debs ball.

Tragically, the collision also left an 18-year-old female teenager in critical condition at Cavan General Hospital, while an 18-year-old boy is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car, a man in his 60s, is also in critical condition and undergoing treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Both families are reeling from the unexpected loss of their beloved children. Grieving family members recounted how the night of excitement and celebration turned into a nightmare. Kiea’s father, Frankie, expressed the excitement in their home before the fateful event, with preparations that included food, champagne, and balloons, all set to make it a memorable night.

Teresa, Kiea’s mother, revealed that the two girls had been inseparable since they moved to Clones eight years ago. Describing them as “great pals,” she emphasized the impact their untimely deaths would have on the young people and friends in the community.

Kiea, the fifth of ten children, had bright plans for her future. She aspired to work in the childcare sector and was set to start college in September to pursue her dreams.

Her father, a motorbike enthusiast, cherished the last memories of a rally trip to Kildare with Kiea the previous Saturday, showcasing the loving bond between them.

Similarly, Dlava’s family and friends held a vigil at her home. Originally from Syria, her father is rushing from Germany to support the family during this difficult time.

Largy College, where both girls were students, is in a state of deep shock and grief. Principal Sharon Magennis conveyed the school’s profound sadness over the tragic loss of two cherished members of their community. Largy College has opened its doors to offer support to the shocked students and staff, coordinating a response through the Critical Incident Plan.

Local priest Fr Peter Corrigan described the tragic scene of the crash, and local councilor Pat Treanor expressed the overwhelming sadness that has descended upon the community.

As the families mourn the loss of their vibrant and much-loved teenagers, the entire community stands in solidarity with them, offering prayers and support during this devastating time of grief and sorrow.
