How the Winnipeg Airports Authority is working to end hunger in the community

-

WINNIPEG, Canada (Commonwealth Union) – Canada is trying to make the country a better place to live by one state at a time. The country going through a lack of food right now the communities are coming together to make sure everyone has enough to eat.

The main force behind this food for all initiative in The Winnipeg Airport Authority (WAA). They have joined forces with the Harvest Manitoba to come with a solution to end hunger in their community and from what is being reported the plan looks like it will be a success.

The WAA has made it a point to put together a community harvest garden. This provides a place for people to donate vegetables and even seeds to help grow food for the people of this community. The garden was launched earlier this week when everyone came together to the airport to plant their crop.

This is in no way a new initiative as the programme was started in 1997 by the WAA where they plant vegetables in the garden with hopes that there would be crop to feed the people that needed it. Initially the garden was on the campus of the airport and now there in a bigger one made in the main premises of the airport. Since the start of the garden the WAA has managed to donate and give away more than 67,000 pounds of fresh produce.

Vince Barletta who is the president and CEO of Harvest Manitoba released s statement to the press where he stated: “For almost 30 years, the Winnipeg Airport and their staff have been growing this garden for hamper families supported by Harvest Manitoba, they’ve got another beautiful harvest this year and we’re happy to help them gather it up. I think the Airport Authority might beat last year’s record of 4,000 pounds [of produce].”
