India anticipates clear climate funding roadmap at COP28

India (Commonwealth Union)_ Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra asserted that India anticipates a “clear roadmap” for climate finance during the ongoing COP28 in Dubai, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the crucial climate meeting. Scheduled to attend the World Climate Action Summit, a high-level segment of COP28, Modi aims to spotlight India’s ambitious climate agenda, emphasizing emission reduction and support for developing nations in dealing with extreme weather events. The COP28, presided over by the UAE from November 30 to December 12, will convene world leaders to discuss strategies for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change comprehensively.

Kwatra, in a media briefing, underscored India’s unwavering commitment to climate finance and technology as integral components of global efforts to address environmental degradation. He expressed the expectation that COP28 would yield a decisive roadmap on climate finance, crucial for achieving new, collective, and quantified goals. During its G20 presidency, India advocated strongly for climate finance to assist developing countries in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. He said, “Our clear perspective and priority have been that climate finance and also climate technology are a very crucial segment of all the global efforts in addressing this challenge of environmental degradation”.

Highlighting India’s adherence to its nationally determined contributions and its leadership in shaping the global climate and environmental agenda, Kwatra emphasized the principled positions taken in international negotiations. He elucidated India’s commitment to supporting the Global South in combating climate change and its impact on the development framework of developing nations, a commitment reflected in hosting the Voice of Global South Summits. He said, “India has taken a leadership role in shaping the global agenda on climate and environment, including through focusing on this issue in two Voice of Global South Summits organised by India”. 

Discussing Modi’s visit to Dubai, Kwatra emphasized its significance in advancing the Prime Minister’s vision for addressing climate change and fostering a global consensus on this critical issue. India’s proactive approach to implementing practical climate action measures, grounded in a firm conceptual understanding and a commitment to green development, was also highlighted. Notably, India is co-hosting two side events during COP28, unveiling green credit initiatives and launching a leadership group for industry transition, further reinforcing its dedication to sustainable development.
