India investigates Hardeep Nijjar’s death

-

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ India and Canada are experiencing an evolution in their diplomatic ties, marked by increased cooperation in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The development was acknowledged by Jody Thomas, former National Security Adviser of Canada, signaling a positive turn in the previously strained relations between the two nations.

During an interview, Thomas revealed that India is actively participating in the investigation, a significant departure from earlier tensions and accusations of non-cooperation. This marks the first acknowledgment by a Canadian official that India has made strides in facilitating the probe, which had become a source of contention. The strained relations stemmed from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding India’s suspected involvement in Nijjar’s murder, allegations vehemently denied by the Indian government as baseless.

Thomas characterized the changing dynamics between Ottawa and New Delhi as an “evolution,” emphasizing that discussions with Indian counterparts have been fruitful, moving things forward positively. The improved relationship is seen as a result of increased cooperation in the investigation, which has led to a more constructive engagement between the two nations.

The former NSA suggested a connection between Canada’s enhanced ties with India and the US indictment against an Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, involved in a murder-for-hire plot targeting Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. The information revealed in the US indictment supported Canada’s position and assertions with India, fostering a collaborative effort in resolving the matter.

Thomas acknowledged the importance of a healthy relationship with India for Canada’s role in the Indo-Pacific, indicating a collective effort to work back toward a more positive and cooperative engagement. While the relationship faced challenges, especially when 41 Canadian diplomats left India in response to threats to revoke their diplomatic immunity, Thomas remains optimistic about the ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen diplomatic ties.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is actively investigating Nijjar’s case, and Thomas emphasized the meticulous approach taken to ensure a successful prosecution, with every detail thoroughly examined. Overall, the evolving relationship between Canada and India presents a positive outlook, driven by increased cooperation and a shared commitment to addressing challenges collaboratively.
