USA (Commonwealth Union)_ There’s a sense of pride and celebration in both film and political circles as Anshika Malika, the daughter of actress and former minister Roja Selvamani, reaches an extraordinary milestone far from home. The young student from India has made history at Indiana University by becoming the first person ever to receive the Herman B. Wells Distinguished Senior Award for 2026, which is the university’s highest honor. Accordingly, the moment was very emotional for her mother. Seeing her daughter get such recognition made her cry with joy. This was a proud moment not just for their family, but for many others who see it as a shared success. Additionally, students don’t get this award easily. Only one graduating senior gets it each year. This person is recognized for both their academic accomplishments and their capacity to make a difference outside the school. As such, Anshika’s pick reveals a lot about the impact she made while at the campus.

Currently enrolled in Computer Science at the Luddy School of Informatics, with interests including music creation and data science, she exhibits the capacity to execute both technical and artistic tasks. Such flexibility is difficult to find these days. In 2025, she also won awards for her work, such as the Maureen Biggers Leadership Award and the Academic Excellence Award. The Herman B. Wells Award has been around since 1961 and honors students who embody the former president’s goal of combining outstanding academic achievement with a commitment to society. Many past winners have gone on to make important contributions in fields like healthcare, science, and public service. Anshika now joins that distinguished group.

What really sets her journey apart is her dedication to impacting more than her education. She has been a leader as a Founder’s Scholar and has led multiple honor societies. All the while, she has been involved in research at a Computer Vision Lab working on cutting-edge technology projects. Her dedication to giving back is so inspiring. She created a volunteer program called “Binary Horizons” that helps people build digital literacy and learn about Artificial Intelligence. In addition, she also works with community organizations in places like the Dominican Republic and Portugal and has helped people develop the skills that will change their lives.

Another inspiring thing she has done is work directly with people. For example, she runs coding workshops, offers one-on-one help to students and mentors people who have no access to technology. In 2024, she launched “Code Connect Namibia”, where people built tech-based solutions to problems in their communities. She also organized coding camps for women in Zambia, where they learned how to make websites and build confidence and job skills. With all these initiatives, she has helped hundreds of people to take their first steps into the world of technology, something that has made her known for promoting digital equality.

This accomplishment is especially important to her mother Roja, who has successfully balanced careers in both politics and movies. The pride and happiness that a parent feels when he sees his child excelling at a major global event cannot be described in words. The award given to Anshika was for all the accomplishments she achieved during her educational journey as well as her leadership capabilities that have made contributions to humanity through her efforts. Anshika’s journey exemplifies how people can achieve great things through their natural ability and hard work. While Anshika has achieved tremendous success, she also inspires a new generation of young people across the world who are using their education to create positive changes in our society.
