USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Indian-American economist Raj Chetty has been honored with Harvard University’s esteemed George Ledlie Prize for his pioneering work in utilizing big data to unravel misconceptions and obstacles that impede the realization of the American Dream. Occupying the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics role at Harvard University, Chetty also directs Opportunity Insights, a consortium of economists operating from Harvard with a focus on analyzing inequality.

Praising Chetty’s groundbreaking contributions in the field of economic mobility and his commitment to disseminating this data for informed policy-making, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer Alan M. Garber stated, “Raj’s groundbreaking work on economic mobility and his efforts to share this data with policymakers are making the American Dream more accessible to all.” Leveraging anonymized tax records, Chetty’s Opportunity Insights pioneered the creation of the Opportunity Atlas, a dynamic tool that visually illustrates economic outcomes for children across the United States, spotlighting neighborhoods that seem to offer the most favorable prospects for escaping poverty.

Chetty’s motivation for this work was sparked by his personal background. He migrated from India to the US with his parents at the age of nine. He observed disparities not only between New Delhi and the US but also within his own family members. He recounted, “My parents, who grew up in very low-income families and villages in South India … the opportunities they had were greatly shaped by the fact that they happened to be the ones who were picked to get a higher education in their families.” He shared that, at the time, in developing nations, families would typically select a single child for advanced education due to financial constraints. Both his parents were chosen as recipients of higher education opportunities in their respective families, and this legacy played a consequential role in shaping the opportunities he subsequently enjoyed, culminating in his journey to Harvard.

The endeavors of Opportunity Insights are laser-focused on assisting policymakers and economists in comprehending the tangible determinants of economic mobility, thereby facilitating fresh approaches to democratizing the American Dream. Chetty’s work employs a big-data framework to dissect the science of economic opportunity, offering intricate insights similar to how a microscope functions in the realm of biological sciences. Chetty emphasized that geography emerges as a pivotal factor in determining children’s outcomes, stating, “There are some places in America where kids with the exact same background have much better chances of rising up. There are other places where they look much worse.” This finding underscores the influence of community, schools, and neighborhoods on an individual’s trajectory. It also sheds light on the debate between nature and nurture, revealing that nurturing and environment significantly shape one’s prospects beyond genetic predispositions.

Initially delving into topics like the fading American Dream, neighborhood disparities, and the impact of childhood environments on economic mobility, Chetty’s research has expanded to encompass various facets, including the role of racial inequalities and social networks. The George Ledlie Prize is conferred every two years to a Harvard community member who has made exceptional contributions to science or benefited humanity through research or discoveries. It was last bestowed in 2021 upon Dan Barouch of Harvard Medical School for his pioneering work in developing the Covid-19 vaccine.
