USA (Commonwealth Union)_ A recent analysis by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) highlights a significant trend in the American workforce. Accordingly, Indian immigrants are at the forefront of the educated immigrant population in the United States. The report reveals that nearly 48% of immigrants arriving in the US between 2018 and 2022 possessed a college degree, showcasing the high level of educational attainment among this demographic. According to Jeanne Batalova, a senior policy analyst at MPI, “The immigrant population overall slightly outperforms on educational attainment, representing 17% of all college-educated adults in the United States.” This finding underscores the critical role that educated immigrants, particularly those from India, play in shaping the American labor market.

India’s crucial role in global immigration

India stands out prominently within the global pool of educated immigrants. With approximately 2-million-degree holders, Indian immigrants constitute around 14% of the total educated immigrant population in the US. Following India, China, including Hong Kong, accounts for 1.1 million educated immigrants, making up 7.9% of the total. The Philippines and Mexico are also notable contributors, with 7% and 6%, respectively, according to data from the US Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey.

Different routes to immigration

Educated immigrants enter the US through various channels. Many arrive on temporary visas for high-skilled workers, while others come as family members of US residents or as humanitarian migrants. Additionally, a significant number pursue education upon their arrival, further enhancing their qualifications. By 2022, around 35% of all immigrant adults in the US (14.1 million people) held a bachelor’s degree or higher, closely mirroring the 36% of US-born adults (67.8 million) who hold college degrees. Additionally, highly skilled immigrants are more likely to have advanced degrees compared to their US-born counterparts. In 2022, 15% of immigrant college graduates held professional or doctoral degrees, compared to 11% of their US-born peers. Notably, both groups exhibited similar rates of master’s degree attainment, with 30% of foreign-born graduates and 28% of US-born graduates achieving this educational milestone.

Employment landscape for educated immigrants

A significant number of college-educated immigrants are employed in skilled occupations. The MPI report outlines that the top five fields for these immigrants are management (16%); computer and mathematical occupations (13%); health practitioners and technicians (11%); business and financial operations (10%); and education-related occupations (9%). The impact of educated immigrants is particularly pronounced in technical fields; for instance, immigrants represent 44% of the workforce in computer hardware engineering and 34% in computer and information research sciences. Additionally, an impressive 29% of physicians in the US are immigrants.

Geographic spread of educated immigrants

The geographical landscape of educated immigrants reveals significant concentrations in certain states. California, renowned for its tech industry and prestigious universities, boasts the largest population of college-educated immigrants, totaling 3.1 million, or 22% of the total educated immigrant population. Florida, Texas, and New York each host about 1.4 million educated immigrants, collectively accounting for 51% of the total. Other states with notable immigrant populations include New Jersey, Illinois, and Virginia, each hosting around 3% of the educated immigrant demographic.

Language proficiency and advanced education

Proficiency in English is a common trait among educated immigrants, with 74% reporting they speak only English or speak it very well. This contrasts sharply with the 41% proficiency rate among immigrants without a four-year college degree. The educational achievements of immigrant college graduates also highlight their qualifications; 15% hold professional or doctoral degrees, emphasizing their significant contributions to various fields.

Challenges faced by the expanding talent pool

Since 1990, the number of college-educated immigrants in the US has surged. The MPI report reveals a staggering 89% increase from 1990 to 2000, followed by continued growth of 55% from 2000 to 2010 and 56% from 2010 to 2022. In contrast, the native-born college-educated population grew at a slower pace. Despite these accomplishments, a troubling phenomenon known as “brain waste” persists. In 2022, approximately 2.1 million educated immigrants (around 20%) were either unemployed or working in low-skilled jobs, such as dishwashing or taxi driving. This issue also affects about 7.8 million US-born college graduates. The challenges in getting foreign credentials recognized in the US contribute significantly to this problem, leaving many highly qualified individuals unable to secure positions that match their expertise.

As India continues to contribute significantly to the pool of educated immigrants in the US, the challenges and opportunities within this demographic remain critical for policymakers. Understanding the complexities of immigrant education and employment can help foster a more inclusive and productive American workforce, benefiting both the economy and society as a whole.
