Indira Gandhi birth anniversary 2020: Priyanka Gandhi says India had a woman Prime Minister 50 years ago

NEW DELHI, India (CWBN)_ Indira Gandhi, the iron lady of India, was the first woman Prime Minister of India. The former Prime Minister was remembered by the country on her 103rd birth anniversary on 19th of November. The prominent leaders of the country and the family members paid tribute to the late Prime Minister.

Indira Gandhi’s grandchildren Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi paid floral tributes to their grandmother at her memorial Sakti Sthal in Delhi and shared their tributes on social media as well. Sonia Gandhi, Congress interim president and the daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi, paid floral tributes to her mother-in-law at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum.

PM Narendra Modi, Congress chief spokesperson and party general secretary Randeep Surjewala, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Srinivas BV, Mahila Congress and other top leaders of the nation also paid their tributes to the iron lady of India.

Rahul Gandhi remembered his beloved grandmother on her birthday anniversary and tweeted, “A tribute on the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi ji, an able and strong prime minister. The entire nation still hails her impressive leadership, but I always remember her as my beloved grandmother. Her teachings inspire me constantly”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted in Twitter: “Tributes to former PM Smt Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.”

The Tweet from Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot read, “Humble tributes to the first woman PM of the nation Smt Indira Gandhi ji on her birth anniversary. She dedicated her entire life to the service of the nation. Her values, decisive leadership and supreme sacrifice can never be forgotten. Indira ji’s life remains an inspiration.”

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi wrote in Twitter saying Indira Gandhi remains an inspiration forever. She tweeted, “Happy birthday Madam. You were an inspiration in my growing up years. You invited me to a breakfast with you after you saw me lead the 26th Jan Republic Day Parade at the Rajpath in 1975. It made waves then, being invited by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. It made history @PIB_India.”

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi remembered her grandmother on her birth anniversary and stated that the US has elected a women Vice President only now, while India had a powerful woman Prime Minister 50 years ago. She expressed her love for her grandmother and glorified her strong leadership capabilities and willpower. The tweet from Priyanka Gandhi read “Kamala Harris became US’ first woman Vice-President. On the anniversary of Indira Gandhi, it should be realized that India had chosen a women Prime Minister 50 years ago. Indira Gandhi’s courage and strength will always be an inspiration for women worldwide.”

Indira Gandhi is the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and Kamala Nehru. She was born on November 19th 1917 and had twice served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984. Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. The iron lady of India dedicated her entire life to serve the nation and sacrificed her life for the same cause. She is well-known for her leadership qualities, courage and strong willpower and still remains a powerful source of inspiration for women.
