Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ The South Indian film industry, renowned for its captivating narratives and iconic stars, has become the center of attention for cinema enthusiasts across the nation due to an ongoing controversy. The issue revolves around two upcoming movies, both titled ‘Jailer‘, one starring the legendary superstar Rajinikanth and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, and the other directed by Malayalam filmmaker Sakkir Madathil, featuring Dhyan Sreenivasan in the lead. Interestingly, both movies are scheduled for release on August 10, 2023.

Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ is an action-packed thriller boasting a star-studded cast including Jackie Shroff, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah, and Vinayakan. Meanwhile, Sakkir Madathil’s ‘Jailer’ is a Malayalam film starring Dhyan Sreenivasan, and its official release date was announced on July 24, aligning with the same date as Rajinikanth’s film. Madathil claims to have registered the title ‘Jailer’ with the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) in August 2021, way ahead of the Tamil film’s title announcement.

Hence, the director has already made a request to Sun Pictures, the production company of Rajinikanth’s film, to look for a different title in the Malayalam version to avoid confusion and potential harm to both films. But, according to reports, Sun Pictures has denied this request and insists on retaining the same title for their film. In response, they have taken the matter to the Madras High Court. On the other hand, Madathil has filed a counterclaim in court, and the hearing is scheduled for August 2.

This dispute has ignited discussions about the significance of clear communication and respect for intellectual property in the film industry. Despite the legal battle, both teams are ready with their respective release plans, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating the arrival of both ‘Jailer’ films. The resolution of this controversy and its potential impact on the Malayalam film industry remain to be seen.
