Local authorities slashed people’s benefits to clear arrears

 in order to remedy the situation, local authorities adopted differing approaches to council tax arrears, with some councils suspending all debt-recovery action, while others even slashed people’s benefits to clear their arrears. Recent data shows that more than 281,000 households were passed to bailiffs in 2020-21, of which 93,031 were related to council tax arrears that had built up during the pandemic last year.
