(Commonwealth_ Maersk (Maersk) recently marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its state-of-the-art warehouse in Sri Lanka, situated in Wattala and spanning an impressive 100,000 square feet. The event saw the presence of key figures including Maersk South Asia Managing Director, Vikash Agarwal, Maersk Sri Lanka Head, Biju Ravi, and Aitken Spence PLC Deputy Chairman and Managing Director, Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, among other distinguished leaders.

This newly established facility underscores Maersk’s unwavering commitment to offering integrated supply chain solutions, thus providing a strategic advantage to both global customers and local suppliers operating in the retail and lifestyle sectors. Vikash Agarwal, expressing his sentiments regarding the inauguration, emphasized the strategic significance of the new warehouse, stating, “Our new warehouse in Sri Lanka represents a strategic milestone in our commitment to strengthen our operations in the country.” He further elaborated, “By leveraging Sri Lanka’s growing prominence as a logistics hub and investing in infrastructure that our customers have shown interest in, Maersk aims to deliver unparalleled value to its clients while contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic growth and development.”

Strategically situated in Wattala, merely 11 kilometers from the seaport, Maersk’s latest facility is strategically positioned to capitalize on Sri Lanka’s advantageous geographical location, serving as a pivotal hub for trade routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. With Sri Lanka’s thriving trade sector and governmental initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure and ease of doing business, the country presents an ideal environment for Maersk to fortify its presence in this strategically important market.

Covering an extensive area of 100,000 square feet, the warehouse offers export consolidation and third-party logistics (3PL) services, with 50,000 square feet dedicated to each. Maersk’s new facility is poised to provide comprehensive end-to-end supply chain solutions, encompassing storage, inventory management, and distribution, catering to the needs of both global and local clientele. The 3PL facility facilitates swift storage of cargo by suppliers and enables rapid movement to consolidation points without unnecessary delays. Additionally, the proximity of Maersk’s adjacent empty yard streamlines the movement of containers into the consolidation point and onward to the port, ensuring efficiency in operations.

An exceptional aspect of this new warehouse is its capability to serve almost the entire Colombo market within a mere four hours, showcasing Maersk’s commitment to expeditious service delivery and customer satisfaction. The incorporation of environmentally sustainable features underscores Maersk’s dedication to reducing its ecological footprint. By implementing rainwater harvesting systems, the facility maximizes water conservation efforts, utilizing natural resources efficiently. LED lighting not only enhances energy efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions, aligning with Maersk’s goal of minimizing environmental impact.
