The Singapore government intends to make manufacturing an important industry during the next decade, producing decent jobs for Singaporeans.
Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong announced on the third day of the Committee of Supply 2022 in Parliament that Singapore’s Manufacturing 2030 project is “already making good progress,” with the industry increasing by 13% since its start last year. It has also attracted $8.5 billion in total fixed asset investment, which will result in the creation of over 6,000 local employment.
Multinational firms have praised this initiative (MNCs). Dyson, a British technology corporation, announced intentions to invest $1.5 billion in its Singapore operations over the next four years with the formal launch of its new global headquarters at St James Power Station in March 2022.
“Dyson’s development here is possible because of the great innovation and excitement of the Singaporean engineers and scientists who have joined us,” stated founder and chairman James Dyson at the occasion, according to CNA.
“You can sense this inventive country’s ambition. It underlines our opinion that Singapore is the ideal location for high-tech, research-intensive organizations.”
“Singapore is at the heart of our worldwide supply network,” he continued. We do product research, design, and development here. We have research collaborations with your renowned universities. For these reasons, it serves as our global headquarters.”
It already employs over 1,400 people locally and wants to hire more than 250 engineers and scientists in robotics, machine learning, and other fields, as well as construct a new global cybersecurity center in Singapore.
Other manufacturers are taking notice of Singapore’s potential as a center. Pratt & Whitney said in early 2022 that they will hire another 250 full-time employees in addition to the 250 hired in 2021. Engineers, technicians, and manufacturing colleagues are among the new employees.According to Tim Cormier, Pratt & Whitney’s vice-president of aftermarket operations in Asia Pacific, the move will return their headcount to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022.
Before the Covid-19 outbreak, the US-based corporation employed around 2,000 people in Singapore.
Cormier stated that the firm’s business has increased as a result of a good rebound for flights inside domestic markets and an increase in demand.
Another business that is benefiting from the epidemic is semiconductor manufacturing. A global chip shortage that has afflicted other manufacturers globally since late 2020 has been hampered by both supply chain and workforce concerns. The issue has hampered their capacity to manufacture anything, from automobiles to consumer items, and has led costs to soar.
As a result, ASM, a provider of semiconductor process equipment, has extended its activities in Singapore, revealing a cutting-edge production facility and operations hub in March 2022.
Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, who attended the launch, stated, “Aside from enhancing its manufacturing capabilities and capacity, ASM’s expansion will also advance Singapore’s semiconductor sector by creating many new jobs and business opportunities.” In the case of the semiconductor business, a recent Randstad 2022 talent and bonus study covering the manufacturing sector depicts a recruiting landscape that favors employees and workers.
Even as other areas struggle to satisfy demand in the semiconductor industry, Asian markets remain deeply established in a highly resilient and integrated ecosystem, mostly through back-end operations like as assembly, testing, and packaging, according to the research.
