Meet the Indian CEO who makes INR 16,70,000 per day!

India (Commonwealth Union)_ Larsen and Toubro, the Indian multinational conglomerate that handles gigantic infrastructure projects, has a market capitalization of over INR 3 lakh crore, making it one of the largest infrastructure companies in the world. The company is currently led by SN Subrahmanyan, who was appointed as CEO and Managing Director on July 1, 2017. He is also one of the highest paid CEOs in India and serves on the boards of LTI and L&T Technology Services. Additionally, he is the chairman of the National Safety Council.

SN Subrahmanyan was born in 1960 in Chennai, and his father worked as a general manager at the Indian Railways. After completing his schooling, he pursued a degree in civil engineering from the Regional Engineering College Kurukshetra, which is now known as the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra. He then obtained his MBA from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in Pune and completed an executive management program at the London Business School.

SN Subrahmanyan tied the knot with Meena Subrahmanyan, and the couple are parents to two sons, namely, Sujay and Suraj. He is passionate about cricket and western classical music. Apart from his role as CEO and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro, SN Subrahmanyan is also the Chairman of L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited and Director and Chairperson of L&T Finance Holdings Ltd. He joined the company in 1984 as a planning engineer, later became the deputy MD of the company’s infrastructure business, and eventually became the MD. He played a key role in implementing projects like Hyderabad’s HITEC City and Bengaluru Airport.

SN Subrahmanyan has been honored several times for his leadership skills and has been recognized as the Top CEO (Sell Side) and the third Best CEO (Overall) in the All-Asia Executive Team Survey carried by Institutional Investor in 2020. He was also named the CEO of the Year by the top Indian news channel, CNBC-Awaaz. In 2019, he received the Emergent CEO Award at the CEO Awards for his exemplary leadership and seamless growth for L&T. The Institution of Engineers (India) also honored him with the Leading Engineering Personality award in 2014.

Additionally, he was placed 11th on the Power 100 Ranking in the Construction Week in 2021. SN Subrahmanyan’s salary package in the last fiscal year was INR 61.27 crore, which amounts to nearly INR 16,70,000 per day. This was a significant increase of 115 percent from his previous year’s salary, during which he took a massive salary cut. Further, Business Today-PwC India’s Best CEOs ranking recognized him as the winner in the Infrastructure & Engineering category in March 2022.
