The fashion industry in Sri Lanka is gaining very recognizable international exposure as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka comes back for its ninth edition from 7 to 11 October 2026. The event, which is organized by the Academy of Design (AOD) in partnership with DIMO, brings together various types of individuals, such as designers, industry professionals, buyers, and international media. The event is the primary catalyst for creating opportunities to connect Sri Lankan creativity with the broader fashion industry.

At the center of this initiative is AOD, an institution that has played an important role in developing Sri Lanka’s design and fashion sector. Linda Speldewinde, who founded AOD, focuses on design education and nurturing creative talent. This is highly important because it provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for entering professional industries. Its contribution goes far beyond education, with the institution working to connect emerging designers with businesses, manufacturers, and international opportunities. Through initiatives such as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka, AOD’s main aim is to strengthen the relationship design education has with the commercial fashion world.

This connection is highly important for Sri Lanka, which has an established apparel manufacturing industry. While the country is internationally recognized for producing garments for global brands, developing its own design identity and promoting homegrown talent can create additional opportunities for growth. Platforms such as Fashion Week are vital for the country, as they allow designers to present original collections, demonstrate their creative capabilities, and build relationships with potential buyers and collaborators.

DIMO, which is the authorized representative of Mercedes-Benz in Sri Lanka, plays a key role in bringing the international fashion platform to the country. Since its introduction nearly a decade ago in 2017, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka has provided a platform for local designers to engage with the broader fashion community. The partnership between AOD and DIMO combines design expertise with an internationally recognized brand, helping connect Sri Lankan fashion with global audiences.

The program, which was held recently this year, includes five runway formats, among them The Colombo Edit, Future Craft, and Destination Island. These presentations aim to showcase South Asian design from a Sri Lankan perspective. This opportunity creates chances for established designers and emerging talents to reach new audiences. Designers from India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan are participating, while international media coverage is expected to increase the event’s visibility beyond the region. Vogue Italia is among the international publications reported to be attending this year’s edition.

Another important aspect of the event is its potential to create commercial opportunities. Bringing designers, buyers, journalists, and other industry representatives together can encourage professional relationships, attract interest in local brands, and help designers understand international market expectations. Such connections could benefit independent fashion labels as well as businesses involved in garment production, textiles, and related creative services.

The event also extends beyond the runway. Its 2026 program includes the launch of She’s Mercedes in Sri Lanka, scheduled for 10 October as an invitation-only gathering at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Lounge. Conceptualized by AOD and powered by DIMO, the initiative introduces a community intended to connect and encourage women who contribute to business, culture, and society.

Looking ahead, the ninth edition also builds toward the event’s tenth anniversary in October 2027. Its continued development reflects an ambition to establish a stronger presence for Sri Lankan design internationally while encouraging collaboration between education, manufacturing, business, and creative industries.

At the end, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka clearly shows more than a showcase of clothing and runway presentations. Through AOD’s involvement in design education and industry development, alongside DIMO’s support and international brand connections, the event provides a platform for Sri Lankan designers to end up gaining recognition and pursue much wider opportunities. Its long-term success will entirely depend on turning this exposure into lasting professional relationships, commercial growth, and greater international recognition for the country’s creative talent.
