Commonwealth _ Dr. Ansha Clement, a Grenadian-born educator, returned from her inaugural mission to The Gambia, West Africa, with a fervent dedication to ignite young minds with the wonders of science education. Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Clement emphasized that her purpose extended beyond mere school visits; it was about instilling seeds of curiosity and knowledge and recognizing education as the cornerstone for a brighter future. Dr. Clement, a trained principal, master teacher at Math for America, and author of “Baby’s First Science,” was part of a cohort of leading educators from the United States and the United Kingdom who undertook the nine-day mission from February 10-18. Their mission aimed to lay the groundwork for a more educated and skilled workforce in The Gambia.

Accompanying Dr. Clement were esteemed educators such as William “Billy” Green, the 2023 New York State Teacher of the Year and a master chemistry teacher at A. Philip Randolph Campus High School in New York City, and Alhassan Susso, the 2019 New York State Teacher of the Year and founder of the Namie Foundation. Their collective goal was to inspire and empower Gambian students and educators alike.

Dr. Clement described the schools she visited as beacons of hope amidst economic challenges, where eager faces greeted her with curiosity and enthusiasm. Conversations about science education flowed effortlessly as she shared anecdotes and insights, hoping to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Recognizing the importance of access to resources, Dr. Clement made it a point to donate books to various institutions, including the Teachers’ Union, Timbooktoo Bookstore, and Starfish International. These contributions aimed to support science literacy at a young age, equipping students with the tools to explore and understand the world around them.

During her mission, Dr. Clement encountered individuals who exemplified dedication to education and empowerment. Mam-Yassin Sarr, co-founder and director of Starfish International, emerged as a visionary educator passionate about women’s education. Through Starfish International, Mam-Yassin seeks to advance humanity through girls’ education and service-learning opportunities in The Gambia, embodying the belief that the world is one country and mankind its citizens.

Another remarkable individual Dr. Clement met was Sanna Camara, a journalist who spent years in exile before returning to The Gambia. With over two decades of experience covering Gambian affairs, Camara has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s media landscape. His commitment to journalism and advocacy for transitional justice exemplifies the power of storytelling in driving societal change.

Throughout their mission, Dr. Clement and her colleagues were deeply immersed in a spectrum of activities, each designed to foster meaningful connections and create lasting impact. From visiting schools to conducting professional training sessions for Gambian teachers, and delving into the vibrant tapestry of The Gambia’s rich history and culture, their journey was multifaceted and purpose-driven.

Engaging with local schools provided invaluable insights into the Gambian education landscape, allowing them to witness firsthand the challenges and opportunities faced by students and educators alike. By offering professional training sessions, they equipped Gambian teachers with new skills and strategies, empowering them to enhance the quality of education within their communities.

Exploring the diverse history and culture of The Gambia catalyzed personal and professional growth. Immersed in the traditions and customs of the region, Dr. Clement and her colleagues gained a deeper appreciation for the cultural nuances that shape the Gambian experience. This immersive experience not only broadened their perspectives but also enriched their understanding of the unique needs and aspirations of immigrant students, particularly those hailing from West Africa.
