Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In central Nigeria, a devastating incident occurred on the river Niger, resulting in the loss of more than 100 lives, including parents who courageously tried to save their children. Mohammed Alhassan, a survivor who was returning from a market, shares the heart-wrenching account of witnessing mothers and fathers struggling to carry their children before succumbing to the water. Although Alhassan managed to swim to safety, the memory of the tragic scene, particularly the loss of innocent lives, continues to haunt him.
The ill-fated wooden boat was carrying around 300 passengers when it capsized in Patigi, Kwara State. The journey along the Niger River can be treacherous due to overcrowding, the absence of life jackets, and portions of the trip conducted in darkness. Such accidents are unfortunately not uncommon, especially during the rainy season spanning from April to October. Similar tragic incidents have occurred in other regions of Nigeria, claiming numerous lives.
Despite the inherent dangers, communities residing along the banks of the River Niger heavily rely on it as their primary mode of transportation. Individuals like Alhassan have undertaken the journey multiple times before, but the recent catastrophe serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who depend on river travel. Alhassan vividly recalls the boat splitting in two shortly after their departure, leading to the catastrophic chain of events.
In Ebo, a Kwara State community profoundly affected by the tragedy, young survivors gather under a large tree to collectively mourn. Normally, they would engage in discussions about football matches or lighthearted banter, but now their thoughts are consumed by grief. Some of them were onboard the ill-fated boat and managed to swim to safety, yet they are haunted by the terrifying sight of witnessing friends, family members, and even strangers they met at the loading dock succumbing to the water. This deeply traumatic experience will forever be etched in their memories.
