How much does India make from medical tourism in the past decade?!

India (Commonwealth Union)_ In recent years, India has emerged as a global hub for medical tourism, attracting thousands of international patients seeking high-quality medical treatments at a fraction of the cost they would incur in their home countries. India’s rise as a premier destination for medical tourism can be attributed to several key factors. First and foremost are the country’s world-class healthcare facilities, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and adhering to international quality standards.

According to reports, India has earned a substantial income of $7400 million from medical tourism in the past decade, and this figure is projected to reach $43500 million in the next decade. As discussed at the BIMSTEC Health Forum organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, the health sector in India has witnessed significant private investments in the last five years. Delegates addressed various key topics, including the integration of mental health into overall healthcare, the emphasis on universal health coverage, telemedicine, information sharing, the exchange of human capital, and collaborative opportunities.

Given the BIMSTEC nations’ sensitivity towards climate change, officials stressed the need for coordination among the commercial and public healthcare sectors, as well as the government, to bring about positive change while considering environmental concerns. The official said, “Because BIMSTEC nations are sensitive to climate change, coordination between the commercial and public healthcare sectors, as well as the government, is required to effect good change while keeping the environment in mind”.

Further, affordability is another compelling reason why India has become a favored choice for medical tourists. Compared to many developed countries, medical treatments in India can be significantly more cost-effective without compromising on quality. Moreover, medical tourism is recognized as an export in two BIMSTEC member countries, namely India and Thailand. The officials also proposed a partnership with the Thai government to adopt the ‘Swastha Sathi’ facilities, a healthcare scheme introduced by the West Bengal government, and to develop a progressive plan for medical insurance.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization that was founded in 1997. With a combined population of more than 1.68 billion people and a GDP of approximately $2.88 trillion, the BIMSTEC region holds immense potential for collaborative efforts in various sectors, particularly healthcare and medical tourism.
