Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s daughter, playback singer Bhavatharini, passes away in Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Renowned music director Ilaiyaraaja‘s daughter and accomplished playback singer, Bhavatharini, passed away in Sri Lanka. The reports indicate that she sought treatment for liver cancer in Sri Lanka but unfortunately passed away in a private hospital. Bhavatharini, who had been battling liver cancer for the past six months, had opted for Ayurveda treatment in Sri Lanka. Notably, Ilaiyaraaja, the legendary music director and her father, is also in Sri Lanka, where he has a scheduled concert later this week. The late singer’s mortal remains are expected to be brought to Chennai on January 26, where the final rites will take place. She is survived by her husband and is 47 years old.

Born into the illustrious Ilaiyaraaja family, Bhavatharini was the daughter of music maestro Ilaiyaraaja and sister to music composers Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja. She also received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the Tamil song ‘Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu‘ from the film ‘Bharathi’. Bhavatharini’, the daughter of Ilaiyaraaja, was also a music composer and playback vocalist. Over the past six months, she has been under treatment for liver cancer. She was recently transported to Sri Lanka for additional medical care, where she passed away in a private facility.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, and Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, along with other notable figures, expressed their condolences for the playback singer’s death. Stalin, in a condolence message, remembered Bhavatharini’s National Award-winning contribution to the film ‘Bharathy’, stating that her absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the world of music. The Chief Minister further expressed that the untimely demise of Bhavatharini, who likely achieved numerous additional accomplishments and lived for many more years, was an irreplaceable loss in the music industry.

The CM said, “Born into a family of musical geniuses, Bhavatharini, with her mellifluous voice that was sweeter than honey, won a special place for herself in the hearts of her fans even at a young age”. The Chief Minister further lamented the unfilled void in the musical industry caused by Bhavatharini’s passing and extended his condolences to her admirers and family, which included her father Ilaiyaraaja, siblings Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja, and sisters Karthik Raja.

Actor Silambarasan, also known as Simbu, shared his condolences on social media, describing Bhavatharini’s voice as one that “forever lives in the hearts of people for its innocence and love.” Various other industry stalwarts, including Anirudh Ravichander, Simran, and director Bharathiraja, conveyed their shock and grief at the untimely demise of the talented singer. Composer Anirudh Ravichander said, “Shocked and saddened, #RIPBhavatharini Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends.”

Actress Simran wrote, “Shocked and saddened by the passing away of Bhavatharini. Sending heartfelt condolences and prayers to Raja sir & Yuvan’s family during this difficult time. Om Shanti.” Director Bharathiraja’s took to X and posted in Tamil. He said, “How will I console my friend? Bhavatharini’s death is an irreplaceable loss to our family.” Dr Tamiliai Soundararajan, the governor of Telangana, posted a photograph of Bhavathrini alongside a poignant message expressing her sorrow over her passing. With her mellifluous voice, Bhavatharini won a special place in the hearts of the audience, Soundararajan said, extending her condolences and sincere feelings to the deceased’s family.

Bhavatharini made her mark as a playback singer and music composer, debuting in the film ‘Raasaiya.’ Over the years, she lent her voice to numerous Tamil films, contributing to the soundtracks of movies like ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai,’ ‘Bharathi,’ ‘Azhagi,’ ‘Friends,’ ‘Paa,’ ‘Mankatha,’ and ‘Anegan,’ among others. She expanded her musical prowess by composing for films such as ‘Mitr, My Friend,’ ‘Phir Milenge,’ and the Malayalam film ‘Maayanadhi.’ Her last musical venture was the album for ‘Maayanadhi.’ The entertainment industry, as well as fans and admirers, are mourning the loss of Bhavatharini, recognizing her significant contributions to the world of music.
