Nepal aircraft tragedy: Black box found and rescue operations in progress

The plane belonging to Yeti Airlines crashed in the Nepal resort minutes before landing. According to the most recent count, 68 bodies have been retrieved from the accident site. Further, Monday has been designated as a day of national mourning in Nepal, and a commission has been established to investigate the accident and recommend preventative measures.

Shambhu Subedi, DIG of the Nepal Armed Police Force, informed that rescue operations started this morning in an effort to locate four still-missing victims. On Sunday, an airplane carrying 68 passengers, including five Indians, and four crew members crashed near Pokhara, Nepal. The 72-passenger aircraft crashed minutes before landing at the newly-launched Pokhara international airport near the old airport in Nepal. The twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 flight crashed on the way from Kathmandu to Pokhara in Nepal.

According to Sudarshan Bartaula, the spokesperson for Yeti Airlines, the black box, including a cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, of the crashed aircraft has been discovered at the accident site and has been surrendered to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). He also reported that the ATR 72 Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed between the old airport and the new Pokhara International Airport. Further, images and videos of the disaster shared on social media sites depicted heavy smoke pouring from the location of the collision.

Following the fatal accident, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the Prime Minister of the nation, convened an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers. He ordered the country’s home ministry, security troops, and other government agencies to immediately begin rescue and relief efforts. Additionally, a special committee has been assigned by the Nepalese government to investigate the reason for the disaster and submit a report in 45 days.

According to the statement of the Nepal Army, no survivors were found at the accident site. Krishna Prasad Bhandari, a spokesperson for the Nepal Army, stated, “We haven’t rescued anyone alive from the crash site”. Further, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other global leaders expressed their sorrow and prayed for the families of those who perished in the Nepal airline tragedy. According to Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority, 57 Nepalis, five Indians, four Russians, and one Irish person were among the 68 passengers aboard the wrecked aircraft.
