MUSCAT, OMAN — 28 OCTOBER 2026
What is needed to determine the future course of a community? In Oman, the answer may start with a ballot. This decision is based on the country’s announcement of two voting dates, as there are 763 candidates vying to participate in the fourth term municipal council elections, which suggests a potential move towards democratically implementing governance principles.
On Tuesday, the 27th of October 2026, Oman’s Ministry of Interior declared that while voting for citizens living abroad will happen on the 20th of December 2026, voting for citizens living within Oman will take place on the 27th of December 2026. This announcement has helped all the candidates and qualified voters to prepare for the elections accordingly.
The number of candidates provides insight into the size of the election. On Tuesday, the 20th of October 2026, the final candidate announcement was made with the number of candidates at 763, with only 15 of them being women. Once the lists have been published, the candidates will now be allowed to campaign until the eve of the elections.
However, two important deadlines must be addressed before election day comes.
Everybody who wants to withdraw his/her name from candidacy will have to do so before Thursday, the 29th of October 2026, and all eligible citizens who wish to register or transfer their electoral registration have until Saturday, the 31st of October 2026. These deadlines indicate the importance of the last few days of October for the candidates as well as voters.
Oman has made the process of electoral administration much easier through digital technologies. All eligible voters can become registered without visiting the local administrative bodies by using the Intikhab application or the elections website.
In what way municipal elections are important?
Municipal councils undeniably influence practical issues related to everyday life. According to the municipal governance system in Oman, municipal councils are responsible for deciding the positions on the plans and projects of development, assessing the proposals for urban planning, analyzing the need for objects providing the population with state services, and providing recommendations about public health and social development.
The significance of the impending fourth-term local council elections in the Sultanate of Oman goes well beyond the voting process itself and puts local authorities at the center of development within the region. Once elected, the local councils will have to focus on the development of local communities, identify relevant local challenges, and decide how to modify local authorities’ operations.
To prepare for this electoral offense, the Ministry of Interior of Oman has established the key deadlines and scheduled timeline for the electoral process. The last date for the registration of voters will be October 31, 2026. All citizens who want to vote must provide their personal data to participate in the voting process or transfer their votes. All eligible voters can now accomplish this operation electronically via the Intikhab mobile application and the election portal, so they do not have to go to governmental organizations. Withdrawal of candidate applications is possible until October 29, 2026.
The final vote list has been prepared by the Ministry of Interior on October 20, 2026, stating that there are 763 candidates (including 15 women) that will participate in the elections. Following this announcement, candidates entered their final phase of active campaigning, which is legally permitted to continue up until the day before voting begins.
