Portsmouth International Port Launches UK’s First Multi-Berth Shore Power System to Cut Ship Emissions

In a significant advancement for the UK maritime industry, ferries and cruise ships are now connecting to the shore power system. Ferries as well as cruise ships are now plugging into the shore power system at Portsmouth International Port. This initiative is part of Portsmouth International Port’s goal to become the country’s first zero-emissions port by 2050.

Brittany Ferries’ hybrid-electric ships, the St. Malo & the Guillaume de Normandie, are both part of a €550 (USD 638) million fleet renewal. They were the first to charge up during the system’s final testing phase. It marks a major milestone in the decarbonization of the port besides the country’s maritime industry.

2 cruise ships have also taken electricity whilst testing the system. The commissioning process began with AIDA’s AIDAsol, followed by Phoenix Reisen’s Amera.

These are the initial steps to the system realizing its full potential. That’s when three ships plug in simultaneously. This is expected to materialize later this year.

The project is funded with £19.8 million (USD 26.73) from the Department for Transport, along with £4.6 million (USD 6.21) from Portsmouth City Council. It’s the UK’s first multi-berth, multi-user, and multi-frequency shore power system. It may permit up to 3 ships to plug in simultaneously.

Any of the port’s customers’ ships may now plug into clean electricity. This means that they can turn off their engines while alongside. This helps to improve the city’s air quality. Those with batteries may also be able to access & exit the harbor under electric power.

Besides improving air quality for Portsmouth residents, the system is projected to help avoid emissions of around 20,000 tonnes of CO₂e from 2027. This may aid the goal of becoming the country’s first emissions-free port by ’50.

Portsmouth International Port director Mike Sellers said that this is a decisive moment not only for Portsmouth but also for the UK ports industry as a whole. Portsmouth became the country’s first port to offer multi-berth, multi-user shore power.

Clean energy may have a large benefit to air quality in the city. It may also help in future-proofing Portsmouth’s port. It may align Portsmouth with international moves toward electrification for all its customers. This means that Portsmouth may continue to be profitable besides providing essential services in the city.

While energy prices remain high, the port, the council, and Brittany Ferries have collaborated diligently to reach an agreement. This partnership was to ensure that the enterprises’ two shore-power-ready ferries could plug in.

Sellers added that there are still challenges Portsmouth was experiencing around the cost of energy. Portsmouth continues to lobby the government aggressively to entitle them to address these. Additionally, the goal is to make energy a more attractive business proposition for Portsmouth and for ports across the country.

Brittany Ferris, chief executive, and Christophe Mathieu opined that as they mark half a century of serving Portsmouth, it’s crucial that they focus forward as well as back. Shore power does exactly that. This isn’t mere leading-edge technology. It represents a tangible advancement in Portsmouth’s decarbonization journey. Perhaps most importantly, there is also a commitment to being a good neighbor. The most immediate benefit is cleaner air for the people residing as well as working around the port. Additionally, this commitment benefits our customers by providing greener travel options.

Mathieu added that Portsmouth’s grateful to everyone who’s worked so hard to make the project a reality. The project includes the teams at Portsmouth International Port, Portsmouth City Council, and the Sea Change partners besides the UK government. Portsmouth is a city that has long moved with its sea links. So, in partnership, Portsmouth’s making a difference that people who live there can breathe.

In addition to the funding for construction of the system, Portsmouth City Council also provided £3 (USD 4.05) million to secure the power that was needed from the grid.
