Europe (Commonwealth Union) _ Queen Camilla celebrated her 78th birthday on July 17, becoming the first woman to receive the honorary title of Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom. The unprecedented appointment was confirmed just a day before her birthday and was granted by King Charles III and nominated by the First Sea Lord, Sir Gwyn Jenkins, in recognition of her standing within the armed forces community.

Her visit to HM Naval Base Devonport coincided with the announcement, with royal officials noting her presence brought a boost of morale to the personnel. While the role is mainly symbolic, it implies Camilla’s increasing profile within the British monarchy and her vigilant continuation of royal responsibilities.

Buckingham Palace released two portraits to mark the occasion of her birthday. Taken earlier this month, the pictures show the queen relaxing at Ray Mill House, her private residence in Wiltshire. In one portrait, the queen casually leans against a fence, while in the other, she sits with a book in her hand.

The official social media accounts of the royal family acknowledged the day with birthday wishes and shared the portraits, quickly drawing warm responses from the public. Prince William and Princess Catherine also reposted the images, adding a simple message: “Happy Birthday to Her Majesty!”

While her public image has undergone a significant transformation over the years, Queen Camilla remains a steady partner with King Charles, particularly as he continues treatment for a cancer diagnosis that was revealed earlier in 2024. Tom Parker Bowles, her son, acknowledged her unwavering commitment towards her upholding her duties and stated that she rarely complains and simply continues her work.

The queen spent the day in private and reportedly attended an intimate dinner with the king, while a larger celebration is planned to be held during the weekend. The bells at Westminster Abbey rang out in her honour, and gun salutes were fired in Green Park and other locations, representing traditional tributes to her birthday.
