Resources are now available to aid in constructing climate change resilience

(Commonealth Union)_ Prior to the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh in November, the Adaptation Committee has approved crucial resources that can assist in directing governments in determining their needs and disseminating their initiatives to increase resilience to the unavoidable impacts of climate change. Floods, droughts, and increasingly violent storms are just a few of these effects.

The Adaptation Committee (AC) serves as the UNFCCC’s global voice on adaptation to climate change, striving to promote coordinated adaptation action around the globe by offering professional advice, enhancing outreach and assisting with the implementation of the Paris Agreement. We must take action on adaptation right now, according to the committee’s co-chair Mariam Allam. Scaling up is necessary, as is transitioning from incremental adaption strategies to transformative ones.

Only improved and well-coordinated adaptation activity will be able to reduce risk and effect from hazards connected to climate change on a systemic level. Involving the entire society is part of the transformative approach to adaptation. The AC provides knowledge products to help Parties improve their adaptation planning and execution in a comprehensive and multi-sectoral manner in order to support this response.

The AC approved a report that examined techniques for determining adaptation needs at their 22nd conference (AC22). In order to complete each stage of the adaptation process, there are certain activities or resources that must be obtained. When Parties evaluate their needs, the document serves as a compendium, presenting a range of methodologies. The study explores participative strategies via case studies.

The acceptance of the AC’s advice on adaptation communications, which Parties can use to prepare and improve the quality of their contributions to the UNFCCC, was another result of AC22.

Building resilience to the inevitable effects of accelerating climate change and improving communication around adaptation action can both contribute to the Global Stocktake, which measures how far the world has come in realizing the Paris Agreement’s goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
