Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ Embarking on a luxurious retreat at Rosyth Estate House, nestled on a lush tea plantation in Sri Lanka, promises an idyllic escape. Located two hours north of Colombo’s airport, this 10-bedroom boutique hotel offers diverse accommodations, from restored 1926 planter’s bungalow rooms to the exquisite Rock Villa overlooking tea country.

Upon arrival, a royal welcome awaits, with a small team of Rosyth staff greeting guests, providing umbrellas, and taking care of luggage. After a refreshing glass of cinnamon and ginger tea, guests enjoy foot massages, and late lunch orders are taken, offering a warm Sri Lankan welcome.

The bungalow, built into a tropical forest, serves as the heart of the estate. Farzana Dobbs, along with her husband Neil, has restored the colonial charm of the original bungalow, adding contemporary elements that blend seamlessly with the forest setting. Stone steps lead to elevated suites, Tea and Pepper, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valley, tea bushes, and pepper vines.

The rooms feature mahogany, palms, cloves, and tea bushes, providing an immersive experience. Terraces with rattan chairs or sun loungers offer the perfect vantage point for capturing the evolving view as the light changes throughout the day. The suites boast deep baths on the terrace, allowing guests to soak in the captivating scenery.

The interior design incorporates light walls and dark jack wood frames, evoking a colonial feel. A discreet alcove for making tea and coffee pays homage to the plantation’s history. Rosyth’s glass dining pavilion serves the best of Sri Lankan cuisine, offering hoppers for breakfast, salads, soups, and Sri Lankan classics for evening meals.

Rosyth’s main attraction is tea, with a departure from tradition by plucking one leaf and a bud, a quality differentiator for their high-end artisan tea. Guests can partake in tea plucking and rolling, followed by a tea tasting with the tea manager, Jonathan. A plantation walk, led by a naturalist, explores Rosyth’s organic gardens, providing insights into the tea industry and showcasing the local flora.

Beyond the estate, guests can enjoy excursions to Pinnawala to interact with elephants or explore Kandy’s Temple of the Sacred Tooth and Royal Botanical Gardens. However, Rosyth also offers relaxation by the pool, spa treatments, and yoga, making it a must-stay venue on any Sri Lankan tour.

For a three-night stay in the low season, prices start from £390 per person, based on double occupancy in a classic room, excluding flights and transfers.
