Jaswant Singh Chail, from Southampton, who was later detained under the Mental Health Act, was arrested outside the royal residence about 8.30am on December 25. This was just two weeks after a man was shot dead during a confrontation with firearms officers Kensington Palace. After the two royal scares last month, the charity Historic Royal Palaces advertised for a new role to patrol the Kensington Palace, where the future king lives with the queen consort live with their three children.

Although the family has their separate security team, another new security guard will be hired to patrol and monitor CCTV at the main residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The part-time role, for which an annual payment of £22,390 is promised, will involve two nights on and then four nights off. “We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our operations team as a security officer (cover),” the job advert read. “As a security officer your role will be to support the team in making Kensington Palace a safe and secure place to work and visit.”

It further noted that the shift pattern may be ad-hoc at times, and would involve working across a seven-day rotation both day and night. “Tasks will include the traditional elements of access control, patrolling, maintaining shift log records, monitoring CCTV, monitoring life safety systems, opening and closing the estate and being ready to assist our visitors in any way that helps them enjoy an unforgettable experience,” it added.

The gunman who was taken out by cops last month had reportedly entered a bank and bookmakers in the Kensington area of west London. He fled in a vehicle before he was stopped by officers in the area which is home to Kensington Palace and several embassies. “Shots were fired and a man sustained gunshot wounds,” the force said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
