Dhalla’s personal story is one of perseverance and resilience. Born in Winnipeg to immigrant parents, she embodies the Canadian ideal of achieving success through hard work. As a young woman, she was a runner-up in the 1993 Miss India-Canada pageant and later pursued a career as a chiropractor in Ontario. She first entered politics in 2004, serving as the Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale until 2011. During her time in office, Dhalla made history as the first Indian-origin woman to be elected to Canada’s Parliament for three consecutive terms. Today, Dhalla is the CEO of the Dhalla Group, a company that operates in the healthcare, real estate, and hospitality sectors. “My mother came to Canada in 1972, and I have had the chance to fulfill a Canadian dream because of the hard work, determination, and the opportunities provided by this great country,” Dhalla said. She credited the policies of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for opening Canada’s doors to immigrants, a policy she believes has enriched the country and allowed individuals like herself to thrive. Beyond domestic issues, Dhalla is focused on strengthening Canada’s international relationships, particularly with India. As a member of the growing Indian diaspora in Canada, she believes it is critical to build stronger ties between the two nations. Given the challenges posed by US tariffs, Dhalla advocates for expanding Canada’s partnerships with other countries, including India, to ensure the continued success of Canadian workers and businesses.
Speaking in Hindi, she emphasized, “Workers and business people in Canada should also get an opportunity to work with other countries.” Dhalla has been deeply involved with the Liberal Party since she was 14 years old, and her leadership campaign centers on rebuilding both the party and the country. Her slogan, “Canada’s comeback starts now,” reflects her vision for addressing the pressing issues Canadians face, including crime, housing, food prices, and taxation. In response to criticisms from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre regarding the Liberal Party’s impact on Canada’s social and economic landscape, Dhalla outlined a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at resolving these challenges.
Central to her platform is the creation of a competitive economy that supports businesses, fosters entrepreneurship, and provides opportunities for young people. Dhalla hopes to restore Canada’s standing on the global stage by forging new partnerships and strengthening existing relationships. She stated, “It’s important that we bring Canada back to the country that was very respected on the world stage, that we work with other countries to ensure that we continue to build great partnerships and great relationships.” As the race for Canada’s next Prime Minister heats up, Ruby Dhalla’s candidacy is a significant development, not only due to her potential as a leader but also because of the groundbreaking role she could play in the country’s political future. As Canada looks toward a new chapter, Dhalla’s focus on unity, economic prosperity, and international diplomacy may position her as a formidable contender in the years to come.
