Scottish veterans see benefits from in-service health promotion

UK (Commonwealth Union) – Many veterans across the world have experienced a series of challenges to return to normal, from post-traumatic stress disorder to difficulties finding suitable employment and reconnecting with their families. However, many of the issues that have surfaced for veterans usually occur due to poor support structures and in many cases veterans themselves withdrawing from society.

A prominent study has looked into changes in the health of Scottish veterans over time in contrast to those who have never served. The conclusion of the study was that although many health outcomes for veterans are getting better, certain significant challenges remain. The study saw that the Defense Health Strategy, set out from the late 1970s, which introduced mandatory fitness training and health promotion in the Armed Forces, as well the prohibition on indoor smoking, have been major components in enhancing the health for veterans.

Researchers contrasted the medical records of 78,000 veterans in Scotland with more than 250,000 non-veterans, looking at trends in their long-term health spanning nearly 40 years. The study, led by Dr Beverly Bergman at the University of Glasgow and received funds from Forces in Mind Trust, which was a continuation to the 2012-2015 Scottish Veterans’ Health Study. It saw clear indications that recent generations of veterans had gained from in-service health promotion and better support.

Dr Bergman, said: “This study provides information on the key areas where veterans’ health differs from the wider community, enabling service providers to target their activities to benefit those whose need is greatest and thereby optimise the allocation of scarce resources.” Bergman further indicated that the findings point out areas where additional studies are needed, and recommends that veterans’ health should be continuously checked by national statistical organizations.

Across the world veteran health has been of keen interest for the authorities as society owes much to their service.
