Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, has highlighted ongoing efforts to engage the youth in the agriculture sector. He emphasized the implementation of proactive measures aimed at modernizing agriculture and creating a more appealing environment for the younger generation.

Speaking at a press conference at the Presidential Media Centre on the theme “Collective Path to a Stable Country” held on the 11th, Minister Amaraweera expressed gratitude for the swift compensation provided within two months after crop damage. He recognized this achievement as historic, made possible through the collaboration of the President and the Ministry of Finance.

Delving into the recent budget debate concerning funds allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantations, Minister Amaraweera acknowledged the positive state of affairs within the ministry. Responding to concerns about the number of allegations compared to other ministries, he clarified that the issues raised were primarily historical and affirmed the ministry’s significant progress in various cooperative projects across all sectors.

Assuming duties during a challenging period, Minister Amaraweera shared his proactive approach to instill confidence in farmers. He cited an example where, following his encouragement, farmers cultivated 212,000 hectares of rice, demonstrating a positive response. With continued dedication, the rice cultivation area expanded to an impressive 512,000 hectares, achieving the highest yield in recent times.

Addressing concerns about the quality and weight of fertilizers, Minister Amaraweera emphasized the farmers’ unwavering faith in the President and the government. Despite challenges, the ministry ensured timely provision of various fertilizers, along with financial assistance and fuel subsidies, contributing to the overall success of cultivation efforts.

Minister Amaraweera’s remarks underscore the ministry’s commitment to overcoming challenges, supporting farmers promptly, and making notable progress in the agricultural sector. The focus on increasing yields and addressing concerns reflects a proactive and responsive approach to agricultural development under his leadership.

Looking ahead to 2024, the Minister outlined the government’s agricultural priorities, with a focus on four key crops—paddy, maize, chillies, and yams. Efforts are underway to encourage domestic cultivation of these crops, aiming for self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports.

Highlighting Sri Lanka’s bird flu-free status, Minister Amaraweera emphasized the opportunity for expanding chicken exports to new markets. He also addressed challenges in the cultivation of rubber, tea, cinnamon, and coffee, outlining plans for revitalization and improvement.

In response to the decline in youth participation in agriculture, Minister Amaraweera discussed measures being implemented to attract the younger generation to the sector, emphasizing the strengthening of agricultural modernization activities.
