South African House Hunting: Into a Mountain in Cape Town

-

SOUTH AFRICA (Commonwealth Union)_ In the South African suburb of Oranjezicht, a five-bedroom house faces Table Mountain’s slopes. The house, which occupies around three quarters of an acre, features a wavy concrete roof, a lot of wood and stone, and is constructed to resemble the mountain’s topography, a well-known landmark.

According to Riaan Ackerman, an agent with Pam Golding Properties, which has the property, “the house is actually built into the mountain.” “The owners envisioned it as a small sanctuary. They take pleasure in doing yoga and meditation. Therefore, establishing a home as a retreat was crucial,” he said.

According to Ackerman, the house, which was constructed in 2011, was among the first in the neighbourhood to incorporate a “eco-pool”, a swimming pool that employs plants and microorganisms instead of chemicals to filter the water. Solar panels are used to heat the pool as well as to supply backup power during power outages. At one end of the pool is the home’s ground-floor spa room, of which the front may be opened to provide direct access for swimmers. It contains a hot tub, sauna, shower, and hammam with Zimbabwean-made red Zellige tiles.

One story above, a concrete stairway leads to the home’s glass front door. The main living and dining area is accessible through a hallway. It is a sizable, spacious room with a double-sided fireplace and black granite floors. On one side, sliding glass walls allow access to a dining deck with retractable awnings.

A spectacular wall of illuminated bookcases that descends to the floor is on the opposite side of the space. The ground-level yoga studio is accessed through stairs that run the length of the library and are surrounded by two offices. A theatre area and wine cellar are also located on this floor.

On the opposite side of the foyer is a sizable kitchen. It boasts a long island made of stainless steel with built-in Viking and Gaggenau appliances. A separate scullery and two guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are located off the kitchen. From the kitchen, a staircase leads down to the adjacent three-car garage, laundry rooms, and staff quarters.

The main suite, which the owners utilise as a children’s wing, is located on a higher level. The main suite contains a dressing room, a bathroom with a free-standing tub, a wooden patio that wraps around it, and a glass wall that opens to the outside. Two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and a sizable common room are located in the children’s wing.
