Strengthening Ties: The Future of Jordanian-British Economic Relations Unveiled at the Jordan Economic Forum

In a display of enduring partnership and forward-looking collaboration, the Jordan Economic Forum (JEF) recently played host to British Ambassador to Jordan, Philip Hall, in a session dedicated to exploring new horizons in Jordanian-British economic relations. The event, held in Amman, resonated with historical depth and modern dynamism, highlighting a bond that dates back centuries and continues to flourish today.

Chairman Mazen Hmoud, alongside other distinguished board members and delegates, underscored the significance of the longstanding ties that Jordan shares with the United Kingdom. These connections, originally seeded during the era of the British Empire, have grown into robust political, economic, and cultural bridges that enhance mutual prosperity. Notably, the rapport between the two royal families—exemplified by recent meetings between His Majesty King Abdullah and King Charles—symbolizes a royal seal on decades of trust and collaboration.

Ambassador Hall illuminated the economic landscape by revealing plans to establish a Jordanian-British business council, aiming to further stimulate investment and foster strategic partnerships. The ambassador highlighted the United Kingdom’s role as a major partner in Jordan’s services sector, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of Jordan’s total service imports. The rising prominence of sectors such as ICT and financial services is particularly noteworthy. Jordan’s competitive edge, bolstered by a highly skilled, bilingual workforce, positions the nation as a gateway to the broader Arabic-speaking market.

Adding a layer of intrigue, Hall noted that Jordan’s pharmaceutical prowess is globally recognized, with Hikma Pharmaceuticals—a key player in the industry—holding a spot among the FTSE 100 giants in the UK. This success story exemplifies the vibrant commercial synergy between the two nations.

Despite the excitement, there are still challenges, particularly in the practical implementation of the post-Brexit free trade agreement. This agreement, mirroring the trade conditions previously enjoyed with the EU, is pivotal in further integrating Jordan’s economy with international markets.

Yet, the ambassador’s vision extends beyond mere commerce. With over 80 percent of British aid channeled toward humanitarian efforts in Jordan, the UK remains a steadfast ally in supporting refugees and host communities, reinforcing Jordan’s crucial role in regional stability.

As Jordan continues to emerge as a vibrant economic hub in the Middle East, its historical ties and evolving partnerships with the United Kingdom underscore a future ripe with potential—where tradition meets innovation to create a legacy of resilience and growth.
