Usually, on the Krishna paksha Chaturdashi, which is 14th day of the waning phase of the Hindu month Falgun or Magha, Maha Shivratri is observed. This year’s Maha Shivratri is observed on March 11, 2021, Thursday. The pooja timings are Nishita Kaal Puja Time: 24:06:41 to 24:55:14 and the duration is 48 Minutes; Maha Shivaratri 2021 Parana Time: 06:36:06 to 15:04:32 on 12th March.

Maha Shivratri and astrology

Maha Shivratri is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, or Krishnapaksha Chaturdashis. The Lord of Chaturdashi Tithi is Shiva. This day has high significance in astrology. According to astrology, moon is the controller of the mind, and the effect of moon is weaker on Maha Shivratri day. Hence, worshipping Lord Shiva on this day strengthens the worshipper’s moon in the birth chart, as Lord Shiva holds the moon on his head. It offers mental strength, willpower, bravery, and endurance to the worshipper.

Maha Shivratri – scientific reasons

Bel leaf is one of the most important elements in Shivalinga’s ritualistic worship. According to science, the reason behind giving Bel leaf to Lord Shiva is it releases 2% of Shiva tattva. However, on the day of Maha Shivratri, it emits 20% of Shiva tattva.
