The death toll in South Africa’s cholera outbreak has now risen to 26, according to the latest update from the Department of Health. The initial outbreak was first reported in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, a week ago. Foster Mohale, the spokesperson for the Department, has once again emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

Moreover, The majority of cholera cases in South Africa have been concentrated in Gauteng province, specifically in the impoverished Hammanskraal district, located north of Pretoria. This region is known to have a population living in challenging socio-economic conditions.

In a recent development, health authorities in Limpopo province confirmed a single case of cholera, marking the first incidence in that particular district. Phophi Ramathuba, a member of the Limpopo Health Executive Council, clarified that the patient did not contract the infection from local sources or contaminated water, but rather had a connection to neighboring Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, regarding the outbreak in Hammanskraal, experts are still investigating to determine the primary source of the infection. It has been determined that the contamination did not originate from drinking water sources. Further investigations are underway to identify the exact cause of the outbreak and implement appropriate measures to contain its spread.

However, in conclusion as a precautionary measure, the Department of Health continues to advise the public, particularly those purchasing food from street vendors, to ensure that they thoroughly wash any produce to eliminate any potential bacteria or viruses. It is essential to be cautious, as the naked eye cannot detect contamination, and the quality and preparation of street food may be uncertain. All South Africans are urged to exercise vigilance and thoroughly wash any food purchased from street vendors before consuming or cooking it.
